When someone nearby searches for what you sell, you want to appear in Google Maps and in the search results. The good news: the first steps are free, and most of your competitors have not done them properly.
Here is how to get your business found on Google in Malaysia, in the order that makes the biggest difference.
1. Set up your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is what appears in Google Maps and in the box on the right of search results. It is free, and for local searches it often matters more than your website.
- Go to google.com/business and sign in with your business Google account.
- Add your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard.
- Choose the most specific category, for example "Bakery" rather than "Food".
- Add your address, service area, phone number, hours and website.
- Complete verification. Google may ask for a video, a phone call or a postcard.
2. Make your profile stand out
A complete, active profile ranks better and gets more clicks:
- Upload real photos of your shop, team and products, and add new ones regularly.
- List your services or products with prices.
- Ask happy customers for reviews, and reply to every review, good or bad.
- Keep holiday hours up to date, especially around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali.
3. Have a website Google can read
Your website tells Google what you do and where. The basics:
- One page per service, so each can rank for its own searches.
- Page titles that say what and where, such as "Wedding Cakes in Subang Jaya | Your Bakery".
- Your name, address and phone number on the site, matching your Google profile exactly.
- Fast loading on mobile. Most local searches happen on phones.
- A secure site (https), which almost every host now provides.
4. Use the words your customers use
People rarely search for your business name. They search for what they need. Think about:
- The service plus the area: "aircond service Puchong", "tuition centre Cheras".
- The questions customers ask you, which make good FAQ answers and blog articles.
- Malay and English terms, if your customers search in both.
5. Tell Google your site exists
Add your website to Google Search Console (free) and submit your sitemap. You will see which searches show your site, how often people click, and any errors Google finds.
How long until you show up?
A verified Google Business Profile can appear in Maps within days. Ranking a website for competitive searches usually takes three to six months of steady work. SEO builds over time, which is why it pays to start early.
